Click Here to find out what the town of Swisher will be doing for the Centennial

When the Executive Committee met for the first time, we decided on three main events for the reunion celebration. We will probably come up with others, and there will be shared events with the town's centennial. For now, here are the events and their status.

Friday August 1, 2003

Registration and Get-Acquainted Social at the Dance-Mor Ballroom in downtown Swisher. Registration will begin about midday. You'll pick up your Reunion materials here and we'll have some fun introducing ourselves to each other. The town will be holding Centennial events that we will be part of. The most significant will be the opening of the time capsule which will be in the early evening. After that we will all gather at the Dance-Mor for some games, introductions, planning and reminiscences. There will be finger foods and a cash bar.

Family picnic. We are still looking for a place to hold this event. but we have several good places we are working on. Now that we've gotten acquainted, made new friends and sort of figured out who is from which family, this will be a great time to relax together, share stories, and make new memories.

Sunday August 3, 2003

Brunch - We haven't gotten this site completely settled yet, but it will likely be held at the Ranch Supper Club just south of Swisher. Now that we've all renewed our family ties and gotten in touch with our roots, we will have to say goodby to some. BUT! There will still be many Centennial events during the day (including a picnic and old time train trips from Castek Park) so please plan to stay Sunday if you are able.

Other Events:
We have secured the use of the basement of the Swisher Savings and Loan for our use during the Reunion. This is where we will have family displays of photos and memorabilia, so start checking your attic and basement for things to bring. The displays will go up on Friday and continue all through Saturday and Sunday. We would also like to have equipment available to scan and digitally store your photos for sharing with other family members.

We would like to plant a tree in Swisher as a remembrance of our first ever Swisher Family Reunion, and so that the Swisher Family will always have a presence in our ancestral home. This will probably happen Sunday as well. This is a new idea and one we are still exploring.

Possible event: a bus tour of some family sites in the area. We are still checking on ways and means to do this. Some places we might visit - Anderson and Castek cemeteries in Swisher as well as the site of the Swisher house. We also may include a trip to Iowa City to view the Swisher family homes and take a trip to Oakland Cemetery where a large number of Swishers are buried.

Search for Lost Swishers Update 7.13.02
I've had a very lucky week! On Wednesday I found the lost (to us) descendents of Catharine Swisher Ballard. On Thursday I found the lost (for nearly a century) descendents of Elizabeth Maria Whitmore! We've been actively searching for these two families for over a year with no success and to find both of them in one week is just mind-boggling. Thanks, Google!

Another lucky week! I've scratched SO MANY names off the lost off the list. In the process I've had more fun than people should be allowed to have talking to newfound relatives from coast to coast. Their generosity, warmth and good nature in the name of kinship has been a joy. When you come to the reunion, I know you too will have this kind of unforgettable experience.

Search for Lost Swishers Update 12.15.02
Two lucky breaks this week and a few productive educated guesses last month have lead to contact with one whole branch of the family that had remained difficult to find. My lost list is dwindling thanks to so many folks who have contributed, researched and passed along information to other members of their families. Check out the short list on the welcome page for those who are still missing.
